Adult Day Program Transportation on Long Island
DachiPlus provides recurring daily transportation to adult day programs, senior day care centers, and PACE programs across Nassau and Suffolk Counties, up to 5 days per week. Call the program first: many adult day health care programs, OPWDD day habilitation programs, social adult day programs and PACE provide or pay for transportation themselves, so Medicaid (MAS) does not book those rides. If an adult day health care program does not provide rides, ask MAS at 1-844-666-6270 whether the trips can be authorized, or book DachiPlus privately at (516) 754-7777.
Adult day programs provide supervised care, social engagement, therapy, and health monitoring for seniors and adults with disabilities, often serving as the primary daily structured support for people who live at home but need more than home care. Transportation is the backbone of program participation. DachiPlus provides scheduled morning pickup and afternoon return transport to adult day health care programs (ADHCPs), social adult day services (SADS), and PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) sites across Long Island. Who pays for the ride depends on the program: many adult day health care programs run or contract their own transportation, OPWDD day programs must provide or pay for it, social adult day programs serving managed long term care members have arranged their own rides since January 2025, and PACE includes transportation, so Medicaid (MAS) does not book those trips. Ask the program first; some long-term care insurance policies also cover the ride.

The price is set before you ride
Medicaid trips through MAS cost you $0. Private-pay rates come from a published rate card and are quoted upfront: estimate your fare before you even call.

How should patients and caregivers prepare?
A little preparation makes every trip smoother. Here's what to have ready when you book or on the day of your ride.
- ✓ Ask the program first whether it provides or pays for transportation: OPWDD day programs must, social adult day programs serving managed long term care members have since January 2025, PACE includes it, and many adult day health care programs do
- ✓ If an adult day health care program does not provide rides, ask MAS at 1-844-666-6270 whether the trips can be authorized; any standing order is entered by your medical provider
- ✓ Provide the adult day program name, address, and daily start/end times at booking
- ✓ Let us know about any mobility devices your family member uses each day
- ✓ Provide emergency contact and health/behavioral notes the driver should be aware of
- ✓ Confirm pick-up time at home — allow 30–45 minutes before the program start time
- ✓ Notify us in advance when the participant will not attend; the recurring schedule can be paused by day
Who pays for the ride to an adult day program?
It depends on the kind of program, so the first call is to the program itself. New York's Medicaid Transportation Policy Manual (section 2.1, effective August 25, 2023) says many adult day health care (ADHC) programs either own vehicles or contract with Medicaid-enrolled transportation providers. In those cases the ADHC, not Medicaid, pays the transportation provider, and prior authorization for trips to and from the program will not be granted. The exception is a separate medical appointment on the same day as the ADHC visit. If your ADHC does not provide rides, ask MAS at 1-844-666-6270 whether the trips can be authorized.
The same manual says OPWDD day treatment, day habilitation, community habilitation, prevocational and employment services agencies must provide or pay for transportation to and from their programs out of their day program reimbursement, so Medicaid transportation through MAS is not the route for those trips. For social adult day care, the Department of Health's MLTC Policy 24.01 made every social adult day program that contracts with a managed long term care plan responsible for its members' transportation from January 1, 2025, using its own vehicles or a contracted transportation company; MAS no longer arranges those trips.
PACE is different again: it covers transportation to the PACE center and to medical appointments, and New York's 2024 transportation carve-out from managed long term care excluded PACE. When none of these apply, or the family prefers a dedicated driver, DachiPlus provides the same door-through-door weekday service as private pay. Does Medicaid cover transportation to adult day programs?

It depends on the program, so call the program first. Under New York's Medicaid transportation policy, many adult day health care (ADHC) programs run their own vehicles or contract with a transportation company; in those cases the program pays for the ride and MAS will not authorize trips to and from it, except for a separate medical appointment on the same day. OPWDD day habilitation, day treatment, community habilitation, prevocational and employment programs must provide or pay for transportation themselves. Since January 1, 2025, social adult day care programs that contract with managed long term care plans arrange and pay for their members' rides, and PACE covers rides to the PACE center. If your adult day health care program does not provide transportation, ask MAS at 1-844-666-6270 whether the trips can be authorized. Some long-term care insurance (LTCI) policies also cover adult day program transportation; check your policy.
